A selection of recent Live Vibe Music workshop and project highlights
SPARK FESTIVAL 2004, 2005 & 2006- a 3 day event for people experiencing
a disability
Spark is an award winning creative arts event created by LVM, the Artistic Directors
for The Junction Works in Sydney. Spark had over 120 participants with 8 artists
facilitating 8 different workshops 4 times a day over 2 days. The final day
is ALL participants presenting their own finale concert showcasing the outcomes
of the workshops. This formula was enhanced by the fact all facilitators are
fulltime practicing performers/musicians so each evenings concert offered world
class entertainment. The 2nd Spark Festival was recently held in July 2005 with
rave reviews featuring a recording studio, movement, cabaret, beat box, visual
art & the creation of a dvd with both images & soundtrack created by
participants. Spark 3 is in August 2006 and is now funded by State Government.
MAGIC IN MUSIC - songwriting with students in Sth Western Qld
LVM were finalists in Qld government SHINE awards for Women using Innovative
Technology in the Community. A focus on 7 schools in 10 days = 9 song cd release
presenting a powerful and positive message to the community focused on awareness
& mentoring of role models on appropriate behaviours. The Working Against
Abuse Service in Roma facilitated this project in St George, Cunnamulla, Charleville,
Mithchell & Taroom and Live Vibe worked along side psychologists to evaluate
the impact of this project on participants and offer follow up support &
counselling.
PROTECT YOURSELF - two songs & a radio 'interview' for a work manual for
carers in the Disability Field A large group of young people with a Disability
created songs building awareness on protective behaviours & appropriate
intimacy. The 'interview' process was created & initiated by LVM & has
proven a very effective addition along with the songs to the manual. The process
of discussion regards the 'interviewer' and interviewee' offered substantial
interaction & excellent 'safe' grounds for very challenging & lively
discussions!
RAP IT UP - Intergenerational recording project with elderly people & students
from Beerwah Flexi School
A Seniors week project for Caloundra Community Centre initiated as an opportunity
for considering bridging the issues that historically have created division
between generations with a focus on challenging ageist attitudes, myths, stereotypes,
to foster greater understanding between youth and misconceptions held by each
group and the general public concerning younger and older people.Participants
initially showed resistance to working together due to genre of music &
ageist attitudes. After experiencing the process of writing & recording
they became very engaged in the process & everyone was willing to listen
thus the music became a real bridge for understanding & interpreting the
issues & messages in each song.
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS - 6 wk recording project with young male students in
Western Sydney schools. This project was about creating a workshop manual &
cd as a resource facilitating positive relationships among behaviour challenged
male student. Participants identified as disadvantaged and or with behavioural
issues within low socio economic and diverse cultural communities in Cambelltown
during the Macquarie Fields 'riots'. This project generated outstanding outcomes
- marked improvements in behaviour and mentoring / peer assessment & cross
cultural / religious collaborations were among some highlights. This project
was recently launched to much acclaim by the State Minister in Sydney and the
songwriting / recording component identified as a crucial element to achievement
by the young male students involved.

YEPPOON ARTS FESTIVAL 2005 & 2006 - a portable recording studio @ a major
community event
A very positive addition to the program was the portable LVM studio! These workshops
provided the forum for young & old alike - novice, semi professional &
aspiring musos flocked to this workshop - in fact we could have run these sessions
EVERYDAY for the week of the festival! The opportunity was to record a song
OR be supported to write & record. The result = 9 solo/duos & trios
@ Yeppoon Festival & as we are musicians www.mettaphor.com we also played
3 shows......all in 48 hours!
BEERWAY FLEXI SCHOOL - songwriting & recording
A 3 month project at school working with marginalised youth on the Sunshine
Coast. Known as a challenging school for the challenged this project generated
much group enthusiasm with exception self esteem outcomes.
COMMUNITY CARE UNIT - Mental Health Music Project for Qld Health
LVM are credited with running one of the most successful music program for people
experiencing Mental Health Issues in Australia. We have presented papers @ National
& International Conferences in 2004 generating national interest in our
process & outcomes. What began as a 12 week project now continues 8 years
later & 17 participants recently released a music CD to intense interest
& critical acclaim.
WALLABY CREEK FESTIVAL COOKTOWN 2006 - a portable recording studio @ a major
community event Live Vibe presented 4 workshops over the weekend in songwriting,
recording, drum n bass, strings & things, & as musicians www.mettaphor.com
we also played several shows.
MUSIC MENTORING & RECORDING - a RADF project mentoring two young men as
emerging artists The Doom Sirens are two young men who experience mental health
issues and write their own material. LVM were engaged to mentor their aspirations
of becoming musicians. We recorded a 4 track EP and facilitated them to attend
a professional photo shoot to generate bios & press kits. This project is
envisioned to be released end of 2005
YOUTH FESTIVAL 2004 & 2005 - a 2 day event for young people
In September 2005 LVM presented songwriting/recording/hiphop workshops @ this
event in Nowra NSW. Based on the award winning award winning creative arts festival
Spark model with 80 participants with 8 artists facilitating 6 different workshops
- clowning / graffiti / short films / break dancing & beat box
DISABILITIES CHOIR NSW & COMMUNITY CHOIR QLD - creating a unique model of
performance choir This choir rehearses to cd recordings. Workshops were held
to select the choir & songs. Live Vibe then created the rehearsal cds in
the studio so now members can rehearse EVERY day if they choose & are able
to rehearse as a group with their carers offering a very affordable, sustainable
outcome for the service.
SONGWRITING, PRODUCTION & RECORDING PROJECT - a four track professional
release/demo
Jennifer Pickering was a child prodigy in classical piano - until the pressures
involved became too much and so began the roller coaster of mental health issues.
Also a brilliant vocalist with outstanding ability the tragedy of circumstance
only exacerbated her illness. This project came about as 'an escape' from a
repetitive pattern of hospitals & self harming. The offer was - stop harming
& start making music! This project has been long & definitively challenging
on many levels however the outcome is astounding. The result - a CD which completed
by November 2006 - a very passionate project above & beyond the call of
duty - an exceptional experience
YOUNG WOMENS REFUGE - pre production & performance mentoring
This project was about a group of young indigenous women with an exceptional
amount of talent & little knowledge of how to focus & express. Over
six weeks LVM developed there songs, stage presence, performance technique &
use of sound equipment leading to performance & recordings at Murri radio
station AAA
ROMA DISABILITIES SERVICE QLD 2006 - a song/recording session for disabilities
& siblings
This workshop over 1 day for people experiencing a disability & their siblings
focused on family relationships- the challenges & the positive, exploring
the issues that concern a family who have varying abilities.
STRANGER DANGER - a song writing & recording project for an after school
program
This project was created due to several incidence of 'stranger danger' at a
school. LVM workshopped children over two days to create a very catchy &
infectious song about issues surrounding safety awareness travelling to &
from school predominantly however the agenda flowed across everyday life. Using
the medium of music gave the kids a huge buzz & also created a very powerfull
message - written by them & sung by them!
MT BEAUTY MUSIC MUSTER 2006 - a portable recording studio @ a major community
event
Live Vibe presented 3 workshops over the weekend in collaborative songwriting
& facilitated two 'blackboard' recording sessions. A local band Squid Jig
achieved their goal of a professional demo & several young women took the
challenge to write a song each in 3 minutes - then record it! The resulting
compilation album is making waves on local radio & offers a unique 'outcome'
for the muster to pursue further funding opportunities.
DISABILITY POST SCHOOL OPTIONS PROJECT - song writing & recording project
5 x 3 hour workshops across 5 centres resulting in a 5 track cd. This project
was an empowering process using vocal & rhythmic skill building exercises
with a focus on visual art to 'draw' the lyrics! A high support group also engaged
by creating a sound scape - everyone regardless of ability became involved -
from banging chairs or spinning wheels - singing their hearts out & creating
an outcome for the service to market & promote their centres.
MOARI CULTURAL GROUP RECORDING - creating a cultural learning tool
Gathering for 4 sessions of 3 hours a recording was created of traditional songs
& harmonies. The group had formed a choir & were keen for everyone to
have access to learn the songs so the creation of a cd with all songs &
then all the different harmonies was an opportunity they relished. Not only
can they be taught they are also captured for future generations.
PRESCHOOL ALPHABET SONG RECORDING - working with young children to create the
singing alphabet
Now this is an innovative way to grasp the alphabet - write your own group!
This project was very rewarding for the kids - many had not yet grasped the
machinations of the alphabet & the process of writing the song engaged them
in a constant learning process using their natural response to music as the
medium!
